Traditional fishing tourism (Pesca Turismo) was developed in Italy as a method of alternative income for small scale fishers and a means of supporting sustainable fishing in an environment with decreasing fish stocks. It has been gaining popularity across Europe in recent years.
The Mediterranean Conservation Society conducted a trial run of traditional fishing tourism at Gökova Bay between 2013-2014, however, due to restrictions imposed by legal regulations the scheme could not be implemented. As of 2021, the necessary legal provisions for the implementation of a traditional fishing tourism scheme in the Gökova Bay SEPA and Fethiye-Göcek SEPA have been created with the cooperation and coordination of relevant authorities.
Reasons for the scheme include:
Creating a new, alternative source of income for fishers
Alleviating the pressure on biodiversity created by fishing and highlighting the importance of sustainable fishing
Promoting traditional shore fishing and fishing culture
Contributing to the enhancement of fishers’ awareness and capabilities regarding tourism and marine preservation
Reinvigorating the declining small-scale fishing sector
Raising public awareness regarding marine conservation
Solidifying the social and professional standing of fisherwomen and fishermen
Increasing the professional visibility of fisherwomen
