Macroalgae

Macroalgae are the foundation of the food chain in aquatic ecosystems and provide habitat and feeding areas for many living creatures. Ecosystems in which these species are prevalent and diverse are an indicator of healthy marine areas.

The Mediterranean Conservation Society monitors the distribution and population sizes of macroalgae every autumn and spring at three locations each within the Gökova Bay, Fethiye-Göcek, and Kaş-Kekova SEPAs to measure the efficiency of its conservation measures and observe the development of marine ecosystems within its work areas.
