Conserving Cartilaginous Fish Through Science and Art Project

The project aims to raise awareness and contribute to conservation efforts of shark and ray species through the blending of science and art. The project took place on the coastline between the gulfs of İzmir and İskenderun. Biological research on shark and ray species that are non-target species and discarded upon being caught are conducted, as well as surveys with fishers, university students, and local business owners. University students were given questionnaires to ascertain their level of knowledge regarding shark and ray species. Fishers were interviewed to get information about the species caught, number of individuals, time of year, and location. The art component of the project involved working together with artists to raise awareness of the species. Shark and ray themed souvenirs such as ceramics, t-shirts, tote bags, and mugs were produced. The scientific data obtained by the project were presented at international conferences and used in scholarly articles.

The project was organised with the support of the Rufford Foundation.
