Starting from September and continuing through the end of November 2022, the Mediterranean Conservation Society performed a major underwater cleaning operation in the Çamçalık and İnce Boğaz areas of Bozburun. This clean-up operation was implemented prior to excavations to be carried out by Dokuz Eylül Institute of Marine Sciences in the Çamçalık area of Bozburun. Pollution caused by earlier aquaculture activities in the area before shutting down in 2010, resulted in a serious threat to marine life. We completed a comprehensive underwater clean-up, which resulted in the gathering of 23 pieces of large net. In addition to nets, hundreds of car tires, plastic pieces, metal scraps, concrete blocks and other waste material were removed from under the water. Since their closing to fishing activities in 2020, rapid underwater development has been observed in these operated areas.
