Children Clean Up the Shore of the Azmak River

01.03.2022

As part of the Natural Heritage Preservation and Transfer to Younger Generations protocol we signed with the Marmaris District Ministry of Education, we organised a clean-up project on the shore of Azmak River in which 60 primary and secondary school students participated.

The cleanup was part of our educational program, and aimed to educate children about nature, living beings, and particularly the marine ecosystem, as well as allow them to feel connected to the sea and nature and introduce them to a sustainable life. For this event, our Educational Design team created games based on an educational model that is game-based and design-oriented. After the icebreaker games, the clean-up began and kids collected litter from the shores of the river that mostly consisted of plastic packaging and bottles and cigarette ends. The collected rubbish was weighed at 74 kilograms, and children were informed on how certain types of waste harm the environment. At the end of the event, children were divided into groups and requested to create an environmentally focused campaign. They were also provided with stickers that state “I Protect Our Natural Heritage.”

In addition to the pupils, attendees for the event included Emre Çay, Muğla Provincial Director of Education; Sibel Kısa, Marmaris District Director of Education; Selma Sarıkaya, Departmental Manager for Education for Muğla District; MCS staff; Marmaris Province Director for the TEMA Foundation; 8 teachers; and 20 parents.
