June 5th has been celebrated as World Environment Day since the United Nations Conference on the Environment held in 1972 with the aim of raising awareness on the protection of the environment. The week of June 5 is celebrated as "Türkiye Environment Week" with a theme to be announced by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. June 8, which coincides with the same week, is celebrated as World Oceans Day. As in every year, Mediterranean Conservation Society organized many events during Türkiye Environment Week this year as well.
During Türkiye Environment Week, many events took place in Datça under the leadership of Mediterranean Conservation Society. On June 4-5, a beach cleanup and a recycled t-shirt painting workshop were held with children.
In an event on June 8 to celebrate World Oceans Day, Mediterranean Conservation Society, Datça Municipality, and a diving center collaborated with the support of 11 expert divers to remove a 100-meter-long ghost net that had been underwater for 14 years. In addition to the ghost net, a total of 39 kilograms of waste, including ropes and fishing lines, were collected from the seabed.
Simultaneously on June 8, a beach cleanup was organized with volunteers, resulting in the collection of 40 kilograms of waste.
