Footage of a newborn Mediterranean monk seal was captured by camera traps placed by the Mediterranean Conservation Society (AKD) in a cave where the endangered species is monitored. These images are considered a hopeful sign for the survival of the species, whose population continues to decline in the Eastern Mediterranean and faces numerous threats along our coasts.
The footage, recorded by AKD in November 2024, shows a healthy female pup and an adult mother, who are known to give birth mostly between October and November along the Turkish coastline. The images were captured in a coastal cave located in Gökova Bay, an area where AKD has been conducting monitoring efforts since 2017.
