Textile Products Are a Major Source of Microplastic Pollution in the Datça-Bozburun Special Environmental Protection Area

The studies conducted by the Mediterranean Conservation Society (AKD) in the Datça-Bozburun Special Environmental Protection Area (SEPA) highlight the extent of microplastic pollution. As part of the research, water samples were collected from 17 different stations in the region, revealing that the concentration of microplastics ranged from 10 to 56.7 particles per cubic meter.

The findings once again underscore the severity of plastic pollution threatening the marine ecosystem in the area. The data obtained through AKD’s research indicate that fiber particles are the most prevalent type of plastic fragments posing a significant risk to marine ecosystems, accounting for more than 90% of the pollution. The fact that the majority of microplastics consist of fiber particles highlights that textile products are a major source of this pollution.
