The İzmir special screening of Ocean with David Attenborough was held in collaboration with the Mediterranean Conservation Society (AKD) and the İzmir Mediterranean Academy, hosted by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality at the Elhamra Stage in Konak. The screening brought together residents of İzmir to draw attention to the future of the seas and the impacts of human activities on marine ecosystems.
Narrated by David Attenborough, Ocean with David Attenborough showcases the breathtaking beauty of oceans and seas while powerfully highlighting the multiple threats they face, ranging from fishing practices to the climate crisis. The documentary also presents compelling examples of how well-managed Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) can help revive marine life.
In the opening speech prior to the screening, Zafer Kızılkaya, President of the Mediterranean Conservation Society, emphasized the significance of the documentary for the present and future of the seas. Kızılkaya underlined that Ocean with David Attenborough not only clearly reveals the challenges facing the oceans but also makes potential solutions visible. He noted that when Marine Protected Areas are managed on a scientific basis and with the active participation of local communities, marine ecosystems can regenerate, and that experiences gained in Türkiye clearly demonstrate that this transformation is possible.
Following the screening, participants shared that the film took them on an emotional journey and presented striking realities. Diver and underwater photographer Ali Ağırbaş reflected on the experience, stating: “I closely follow the negative trajectory. This documentary gave me hope, and I truly enjoyed it. Especially the footage in the final scenes showing the increase in humpback whale populations was incredibly hopeful for me.”
The strong interest shown by young participants in this special screening, organized in collaboration with the İzmir Mediterranean Academy, once again highlighted the growing public awareness around marine conservation.
